UMAX Also Offers Rebate on Windows 98 with
the Purchase of an Astra Scanner
Fremont, Calif., June 29, 1998 -- UMAX Technologies, Inc., the U.S. scanner market leader and supplier of imaging and computer technologies, today reduced prices on the Astra 1220P and Astra 1220S scanners by $30. The Astra 1220P, previously available for an estimated street price of $179, is now priced at $149. The Astra 1220S, which was previously available at an estimated street price of $229, is now priced at $199. Consumers can receive an additional $10 off their Astra 1220P or Astra 1220S scanner when purchased together with Microsoft Windows 98 or a Windows 98 upgrade. The $10 mail-in rebate applies to the purchase of any UMAX Astra scanner bought between July 1, 1998 and July 31, 1998.
The Astra 1220 series of scanners offer SOHO (small office/home office) and first-time users professional image quality 36-bit color quality output with an optical resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi, expandable to a maximum resolution of 9600 x 9600. This series of scanners includes the Astra 1220P, with a parallel port-interface, and the Astra 1220S, its SCSI-interface counterpart. Additionally, the Astra 1220U, which uses a Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface, will begin shipping in July 1998.
"The Astra 1220 series combines professional-level image quality with the performance, ease-of-use and value pricing on which we have built our reputation," said John Roman, senior director of marketing for UMAX Technologies. "With the new pricing and rebate, UMAX is making it even more affordable for consumers to add a scanner to their system when they upgrade to Windows 98."
Best-Selling Flatbed Scanner in the U.S.
UMAX currently offers three scanner families, the Astra line, the PowerLook line and the Mirage line, which are Windows 98-ready. The award-winning Astra series offers scanning solutions for everyone from the first-time user to the business professional who wants to incorporate quality graphics in office or personal documents. According to the most recent market research from PC Data*, the Astra series is the best-selling flatbed scanner in the U.S.
Astra 1220P and Astra 1220S Offer Flexibility for Both PC and Mac Users
The Astra 1220P uses a pass-through parallel port interface for easy installation to both PC desktop and laptop computers. This "plug and play" capability makes connecting the scanner to any computer's printer/parallel port a snap, even for non-technical users. The Astra 1220S is both PC and Macintosh-compatible and offers a standard SCSI-2 interface. For users needing uncompromised scanning speed, the Astra 1220S delivers the most flexibility with the easiest installation.
Superior Image Quality
The Astra 1220 products scan photographs, artwork, graphics or any document up to a letter size maximum scanning area. Utilizing a charge coupled device (CCD), the new UMAX scanners bring out the richness and preciseness of the original image. The products are capable of extending their hardware resolution from 600 x 1200 dpi to a maximum interpolated resolution of 9600 dpi through UMAX Ultra View Technology. This makes the scanners ideal for web graphics, newsletter artwork, customer presentations and proposals, school reports, and much more.
Robust Software Bundle
The Astra 1220 scanners are bundled with Adobe PhotoDeluxe and Presto! PageManager from NewSoft. Adobe PhotoDeluxe is a step-by-step image editor with guided activities to create screensavers, cards, calendars and more. Presto! PageManager is a powerful "drag-and-drop" software tool which allows consumers to print, copy, email, fax and transfer documents to their favorite applications. Caere Omnipage LE OCR performs optical character recognition that allows users to scan text documents, with 99% accuracy, into their favorite applications as computer-editable text. The UMAX copy utility allows documents to be scanned directly to a printer, turning the scanner and printer into a copy machine. The Astra 1220 products, which are fully TWAIN compliant, utilize VistaScan, the award-winning UMAX scanner driver that powerfully enhances image quality.
