FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UMAX Ships UGate-3000 Cable/ADSL Modem With built-in 4 port 10/100 Auto-Sensing Hub Internet Sharing Gateway Plus Dynamic DNS Technology

Combined Gateway and Firewall Lets Up To 253 Users Share One IP Address Over Cable or ADSL Modem for less than $400

Fremont, Calif., August 30, 1999 -- UMAX Technologies, Inc., a leader in imaging and computer technologies, today announced the newest addition to the UGate family of Internet access solutions, the UGate-3000. The UMAX UGate-3000 is a cable/ADSL modem Internet sharing gateway and firewall designed to provide simultaneous, high-speed, LAN access for up to 253 workgroup users.

The UGate-3000 takes advantage of cable and ADSL high-bandwidth technologies to offer each user on the LAN, access to the Web, FTP and other Internet services via a single IP address. The UGate-3000 supports PCs, Macs or any platform supporting TCP/IP networks and has an estimated street price of $399.95.

"The UGate-3000 offers the most cost-effective way to share high-speed Internet connection not only by its easy-to-use user interface, built-in 4-port 10/100 hub but also its unique Dynamic domain name service. This service expands the Internet utilization to maximum for users" said Janus Hao, Product Marketing Manager of UMAX' Networking Communications Division. "Fully configurable in just minutes, the UGate-3000 uses a cable/ADSL modem which provides for a substantially faster connection than traditional analog modems, but is significantly more affordable than a T1 line. It is the first Internet gateway product that integrates the advantage of Cable/ADSL modem and Dynamic DNS technology."

Flexible Configuration, Management & Ease-of-Use

The UGate-3000 can be seamlessly configured to use either a cable or ADSL modem to provide a high-speed, multi-user Internet connection via a single IP address. By sharing IP addresses, users save money. A single ISP account can support the entire user community accessing the Web.

The UGate-3000 also has an embedded HTTP server allowing easy configuration with any standard web browser from the Internet or any workstation on the LAN. The UGate-3000 can be connected to a router to allow additional users from a satellite office to access the LAN, but without needing to reconfigure the LAN. The UGate-3000 can also act as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, eliminating the time needed to configure each system on the network individually. As a DHCP client on a WAN, the UGate-3000 is ready to receive configuration information, automatically from the ISP.

Dynamic Domain Name Service

The UGate-3000 is equipped with Dynamic DNS technology, powered by TZO.COM. This free service is compliments of Umax. The Ugate Dynamic DNS service gives the user a unique Sub-Domain within the Ugate.net Domain.

This Standard Dynamic DNS service built into your firmware of the Ugate, allows anyone with a Dynamic IP address to get a static domain name for use on the Internet. Even if you have a Dynamic IP account, your Ugate.Net Sub-Domain name will be static (It will never change) and consistent. People will be able to connect to your computer as Yourname.Ugate.net instead of using a Dynamic, ever-changing IP address. When you create your free 1-year name for this service, there are no additional Internic charges since you are a member of the Ugate.Net domain.

The advantage to having a domain name for your computer is that other people will be able to reach you by name. After creating a name, users can then use the computers' attached to the UGate-3000 to host their own Web, FTP, Mail Server or any other type of server. Give this Ugate.Net Domain Name to friends and family, and they will be able to connect to users' computers at anytime. No more memorizing IP numbers. It is ideal for hosting Internet servers and for use with videoconferencing and other TCP/IP enabled applications.

Network Security

The UGate-3000 includes integrated firewall to protect and ease security concerns. The UGate-3000 can also be configured to limit Internet access or block any specific port to deny certain Internet requests.

Virtual Server and Exposed Computer

The UGate-3000 uses NAT(Network Address Translation) technology to keep Internet intruders from reaching any computers behind the UGate-3000 firewall, UMAX also offers a protected virtual server feature that allows Internet users to access the internal server. The UGate-3000 also uses an "exposed computer" feature to allows Internet users to access Web, FTP and other services on the LAN requiring unrestricted two-way access.

UGate Family of Products

The UGate-3000 joins the family of UGate products which already includes the UGate-Plus and the UGate-II. The UMAX UGate-II, designed for SOHO users, offers LAN access for up to 253 users with a four-port 10BaseT hub and integrated gateway supporting dual WAN access over ISDN or standard modem analog lines. The Internet sharing device has an estimated street price of $299.95.
