Why Power, and Power-Cycling is important, and what it can do for you.
- Power-Cycling is perhaps the #1 fix for technical support issues, resolving nearly half
of reported problems.
- Power-Cycling your scanner resets internal components to factory defaults, eliminating
potential corrupt data issues. These problems may cause image quality issues, such as blurred
images, color banding, color casting and tinted scans.
- The AC current source (wall outlet in your home) is extremely important. Using too many
devices on one circuit can cause electrical problems and even present a safety hazard.
- Plugging the scanner or the scanner's power adapter (as applicable) directly into a wall
outlet will help extend the service life of your unit by ensuring a constant flow of
current.
- If you are concerned about power surges, contact a local hardware store or electronics
dealer about obtaining a single-outlet surge protector. These units are available in many
capacity ranges, from those built for small radios to ones made for industrial appliances.
Obtain one suitable for a low power consumption electronic device.
How to Power-Cycle your Umax Scanner.
- Shut down your computer.
- For scanner units with external power adapters (small black box with prongs for a wall outlet),
remove the black power cable from the back of the scanner.
- For units with power switches, move the switch to the OFF position.
- With both the Computer and Scanner OFF, remove the data cable (Firewire, USB, Parallel or SCSI)
from the back of the scanner. It is not essential to remove it from the back of your computer.
- Wait 30 seconds for stray voltage on the scanner logic board to dissipate.
- Locate a WALL OUTLET for your scanner's power cord. Do NOT use a multi-outlet surge protector
for purposes of troubleshooting, and for reasons listed at the top of this document.
- Reconnect the power (external adapter units) or switch the scanner back on, as applicable.
- Wait 30 seconds, or until the indicator lights (green lights) remain on and not flashing,
whichever is longer.
- Disconnect the power / turn off the scanner again, as applicable.
- Connect the data (SCSI, parallel, USB or Firewire) cable to your scanner. Ensure proper
connection at both the scanner and computer ends of the cable.
- Re-Apply power to your scanner as above, and wait for it to come to 'ready'.
- Power-On your computer as you normally do.
- Try a test scan.
