MAKE YOUR SCSI SCANNER WORK WITH FIREWIRE IN OS X
Your Umax SCSI scanner may work with SilverFast software in OS X (10.2.1~10.4) if you can successfully convert the SCSI interface into a FireWire interface.
To do this, we suggest the use of the Ratoc FR1SX FireWire to Ultra SCSI adapter/converter.
You will need:
- One Ratoc FR1SX
- One HD50 to 50-pin Centronics SCSI cable.
(preferably male for the 50-pin centronics and female for the HD50 end)
- One female to female HD50 gender changer. (only if you have the 50-pin centronics male to HD50 Male cable)
- One Ratoc power adapter for the FR1SX
(Available from the Ratoc web site or reseller)
- SilverFast SE or Ai from the Umax web site
1. Connect the Ratoc power adapter to the wall and to the FR1SX
2. Attach the necessary cable and/or gender changer plus one Ratoc FR1SX.
3. Power on the Umax SCSI scanner and wait until the lights on the front are solid green and not blinking.
4. Attach the FireWire cable to the Mac and the Ratoc converter.
5. Power on the Mac.
6. Start the FR1 utility for OS X located on the CD Rom that came with the Ratoc converter.
7. Click on the "Enable Fr1 Utility" button. Follow the instructions that lead to the inevitable restart of your Mac.
8. When the Mac restarts, reopen the Utility and set the target ID to the SCSI ID you have selected on the back of your unit.
9. Click on "Start Configuration Setting".
10. You must click the button that reads "Disable FR1 Utility". You have to stop the utility to save anything. Quitting the utility does not apply your changes.
11. You will be asked to restart once more. Do it and your Umax SCSI scanner should be working when you restart the computer. You should hear the Umax SCSI scanner initialize this time when the Mac reboots.
