This is a workaround for UMAX USB scanner on Windows 7. If your UMAX USB scanner can work with Windows XP on your computer, basically you are qualified for this solution if you are using Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate version on your computer. This workaround does NOT work for Windows 7 Home Premium or Home Basic version. The workaround for Windows 7 Home edition, please click here.
Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 provides an easy way to install and run your applications for Windows XP 32-bit directly from your Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit based PC. It utilizes virtualization technology such as Windows Virtual PC to provide a Virtual Windows XP environment for Windows 7. Windows XP Mode provides Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate users the flexibility to run many older productivity applications in a virtual Windows XP environment on a Windows 7-based PC. So before you go further on this page, please make sure your UMAX scanner is fully workable with Windows XP on your computer.
How does UMAX USB scanner work with Windows 7? To make your UMAX USB scanner work with Windows 7, you will have to install Windows XP Mode program first. Please go to Microsoft web site to download three programs:

1, When you click on the download link above, you will see the screenshot below. Select your Windows 7 version and language. Windows 7 Professional/English is our example here.

2, Please follow the order to download & install "Windows XP Mode" first, "Windows Virtual PC" second, and then "Windows XP Mode update". Click on "Continue" to complete the Windows validation process


3, Click on "Save" to save the file to your desired location and then double click on it to initiate the installation process. Please do it the same for the all three files.

4, Follow the on screen direction to complete the installation:


To Open and Run Windows XP Mode
5, Open the Start Menu, then click on All Programs, expand the Windows Virtual PC folder, and click on the Windows XP Mode shortcut. (see screenshot below)

6, Check the I accept box, then click on the Next button.

7, Type in a password and type it in again to confirm it, and click on the Next button.
NOTE: If you would like to be logged on automatically whenever you open Windows XP Mode, then check the Remember credentials box.

8, Select the "Help protect my computer by turning on Automatic Updates now" box, then click on the Next button.

9, Click on the Start Setup button.

10, You will now see this for a few moments while Windows XP Mode is being setup.

11, When setup is finished and you did not check the Remember credentials box in step 7 above, then you will need to enter your password and click on OK. If you did, then skip this and continue on next step. The Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC window will now open. You are now in Windows XP Mode. Basically Windows XP Mode is a small Operating System window under Windows 7 environment.

12, Now we will work on everything in this Windows XP Mode windows: Insert your scanner driver software for Windows XP into your CD/DVD ROM drive. Here we are using PowerLook 2100XL USB scanner's driver "MagicScan 6.0" as an example. Click on "Start" and then "My Computer". Right click on the CD/DVD drive and then click on "AutoPlay".

13, MagicScan 6.0 Installation will start. Click on "Next" to go on.

14, Click on "Yes" if you agree with the License Agreement.

15, Click on "Next" to go on.

16, Click on "Next" if you are ok with the default location.

17, Select "Typical" for most of customers.

18, After the installation is finished, it will ask you to restart. Click on "Restart Now" to continue. This will not really restart your computer but just simply restart the Window XP Mode Program.

19, After restart the Windows XP Mode, please turn on your UMAX USB scanner. When scanner's lights become Ready/Green solid, you can plug in its USB cable into your computer. You should hear a short beep after that. Then look at the left top menu of the Windows XP Mode window. Click on USB menu and then click on "UMAX USB 2.0 Scanner Attach".

20, Now it shows the "Found New Hardware Wizard". Please select "No, not this time".

21, Then use the default selection "Install the software automatically(Recommended)".

22, Select "Continue Anyway" in the digital sign message.

23, Click on "Finish" to complete the scanner installation.

To run the scanner:
24, Go to "Start", "All Programs", "MagicScan 6.0", and click on "MagicScan 6.0" program in Windows XP Mode window.

25, Enjoy your UMAX USB scanner in Windows 7!
